Good afternoon!
Today was very eventful. We visited Chiang Mai University where we met with students and faculty and discussed various topics ranging from Thailand's healthcare system to how they conduct MTMs. Thailands healthcare system is very different than the USAs in the way that pharmacists can diagnose and prescribe medications to patients without them ever visiting a doctors office. Yes, that seems very convenient for the patient along with the saving time for the doctor's however in my opinion it only leads to more drug abuse and possible resistance to antibiotics. On top of the fact that the screening that should be done for certain antibiotics may not be done which could result in taking a medication that is not even needed. Needless to say, I like our (USA) healthcare system much better.
Students came in and joined us after lunch as we discussed their MTM program which consisted of a national medication therapy form that is universally used. The students and our group had some stimulating conversations about comparing the 2 healthcare systems and what we liked/disliked about both. We then went to see the community pharmacy that is attached to the school. This pharmacy, like many others that we have seen, had an herbal section, OTC area as well as 'behind the counter' medications. All in all it was a very informative day and I look forward to exploring more of what Chiang Mai University has to offer.
Till next time,
